Earthquake Early Warning System

Fostering India's Earthquake Preparedness Through Sanlien's Himalayan Collaboration

"Through collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology, Sanlien's 2013 initiative in India involved installing advanced seismic monitoring devices in the Himalayas near Roorkee to comprehensively track tectonic plate movements and provide essential earthquake warnings to Delhi."

Sanlien India Collaboration Team

Introduction

Sanlien’s involvement with India took root in 2013 through a collaborative effort with the Indian Institute of Technology. The joint mission aimed to install advanced seismic monitoring devices across the rugged terrains of the Indian Himalayas, in close proximity to Roorkee. This ambitious undertaking was driven by a clear objective: to comprehensively monitor the intricate movements of tectonic plates, specifically those belonging to the Eurasian and Indian plates. In addition to this scientific pursuit, the project carried a crucial societal responsibility—to furnish early warnings to the residents of Delhi, a sprawling metropolis located 300-400 km away, in the event of an earthquake.

Central to the project’s scope is the installation of approximately 200 specialized monitoring units, strategically situated at an elevation of 2,500 meters along the Himalayan ridge. These resilient devices, poised at the heart of this seismic hotspot, offer an unprecedented vantage point for observing the subtle yet seismic shifts in the Earth’s crust.

While the project carries academic underpinnings and enjoys the active engagement of the Indian Ministry of Earth Science, its impact reverberates far beyond the realm of research. The envisioned system holds the potential to furnish the residents of the Capital region with a crucial interval of 60-90 seconds to respond in the event of an earthquake. This seemingly brief duration can be a lifeline, facilitating timely evacuation and life-saving actions.

In essence, Sanlien’s collaboration in this endeavor is a testament to the fusion of cutting-edge technology, scientific curiosity, and societal welfare. The seismic landscape of India, as observed from the Himalayan heights, is a living laboratory where innovation and compassion converge.
